A note from Jen, “Head Monkey Wrangler” of Akrosphere Aerial & Circus Arts:
There was an AUDIBLE gasp…
50 people watched their 7 year olds climb 15 feet into the air.
I thought they were going to pass out.
And I know it sounds crazy.
But if you know one thing about us, then I want it to be this…
We. Keep. Our. Kids. Safe.
It sounds counter-intuitive to think of 15 feet in the air as “safe”, doesn’t it?
However, for the skills these particular kids were about to perform, HIGHER = SAFER.
They weren’t in danger of falling out of the silks. They were actually in what we call a “locked” move, so they couldn’t fall out if they tried.
However, if they got “stuck”, they needed the vertical room to get themselves out of the move. And there were 36” crash mats under them.
And the coaches were a foot away and watching every move the kids did, to make sure everything was executed properly.
(To be honest, if the kids couldn’t execute every move perfectly, they never would have been performing the skill.)
We are actually one of the safest activities around…
- Each of our apparatus specialized head coaches has trained in the art of coaching circus with some of the best in the world. Not just trained to perform, but trained how to safely coach and spot!
- We employ assistant coaches in every class, for extra eyes and extra hands.
- Our class sizes are incredibly small, maxxing out at 12 participants per class.
- We meet and exceed the safety regulations of the two professional circus organizations we belong to: American Circus Educators and the American Youth Circus Organization. (In fact, one of our coaches actually teaches safe rigging techniques for them!)
- We employ the use of safety lines, 36″ crash mats, time-proven stepping stone apparatus curriculums, rigging rated to 50,000+ lbs of dynamic force, and numerous other safety strategies.
- Our head coaches not only have the highest level of coaching training, but they also have varying degrees in kinesiology, childhood development and education, sports medicine, and a million other things. (But we chatted about that yesterday!)
Which means our students stay safe.
And our AKRO-parents can relax at “spa-days” while their kids are in our care.
Just look at how happy and care-free our students are…

Every week, we get messages from our parents, saying things like:
“She came home with new skills daily and only had great things to say about her coaches who kept her safe while teaching her to hang and swing in the air!” — Stacey; Hannah’s mom
“She is learning so much about self control and the importance of following instructions carefully! Yet she thinks it’s the most awesome thing EVER!” — Jessica; Gracie’s mom
They were reluctant about sending their kids to a circus gym. It gives us a LOT of pleasure to say “We told you so!”.
No offense, but we can’t wait to add your name to our “We told you so” list! 😉
